Fly tipping

Tackling fly tipping is important to ensure that Birmingham is a city that is clean and safe for people and communities to enjoy.

Fly-tipping is illegally dumped rubbish which can lead to a fine of up to £50,000 along with imprisonment. Birmingham City Council investigates dumped rubbish and may serve a legal notice to landowners to clear rubbish that attracts or harbours vermin. Where dumped rubbish is on publicly owned land, the aim is to remove the rubbish as soon as possible.

This will be prioritised based on:

  • Location
  • Risk
  • Ease of removal
  • Available resources.

Households have a legal duty to ensure anyone taking waste from their house is authorised by the Environment Agency. You should ask to see their waste carrier permit and check the EA’s register. Failing to use an authorised service is a criminal offence. Where there is sufficient evidence, individuals who are fly tipping will be prosecuted.
